Walking for a Good Cause (Charity Walk - 14.05.2016)

What's Next?

What did we do next, you ask?

Well, here we are! Back again with another project which is called the CHARITY WALK that was organized this morning from 7.30am until 11.30am. This event was held in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of the Faculty of Economics and Administration, University of Malaya (FEAUM). In collaboration with Malaysian Advocates For Cerebral Palsy (MyCP) and the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), this event aimed at creating awareness about Cerebral Palsy among campus community and the public.

As a member of Genie (my Social Engagement group's name), my group mates and I were encouraged by our coordinator to participate in this event. Fourteen of us including me took part in this event. Registration began around 7.30am-8.00am. We were then given light refreshments before we begin walking. We also did a quick warm up to gently prepare our body for the walk.

Everyone has a green ribbon pinned to their t-shirts but children and individuals with Cerebral Palsy were given red ribbons, this is for us to identify them easily. To my surprise, many lecturers, staffs, local and foreign students and also the public were there to support this event. It was heart warming to see the presence of many who were there showing their support for individuals with Cerebral Palsy.

Do you know what is Cerebral Palsy? At first, even I, myself did not know about this disorder.

Cerebral Palsy is a neurological condition that affects movements, positions and body coordination whereby approximately 1 out of 278 children is diagnosed with it. Often, symptoms include poor coordination, still muscles, weak muscles, and tremors. There may be problems with sensation, vision, hearing, swallowing, and speaking. For more information, you can check the Malaysian Advocates For Cerebral Palsy (MyCP) website, http://www.mycp.org.my/

This is us before the walk (although it says "Finish" haha!).

Even though we had to wake up very early for this charity walk, but we were reminded that it is for a good cause. So, we did it with a cheerful heart :) It was also a great time for us to bond as a group.

After the walk, we managed to talk to a mother who has two kids with Cerebral Palsy. She shed tears while we were conversing. In her arms was her youngest child, Arif, who is 1 year and 2 months old. Her other child was enjoying the games that was going on at that time. She told us that although she is upset, but she was also blessed with two innocent kids. We could see the love she had for her kids when she spoke about them. It was a touching moment for us.

We who are blessed with limbs and a perfect body would always take life for granted. It was an eye opening situation for us to feel grateful for what we have and to thank God for blessing us with limbs. So, love yourself!

I just want to give a big shout out to those who have worked hard in organizing this meaningful event. Thank you for such a great experience and I hope that it has achieved it's objective in spreading awareness.

"A small step makes a big change!"

Love,
Sher-Li
